October Program: A Visit to the American Red Cross National Headquarters Disaster Operations Center in Washington, DC.

Our October meeting will be off-site: we'll tour the new American Red Cross (ARC) National HQ Disaster Operations Center (DOC) at 2025 E Street on Tuesday, October 21st, at 6:30 pm. Transportation from the Arlington County Chapter (ACC) of the ARC will be provided: Meet at the ACC about 6:00pm to catch the van.

November Program: Elections, and More Linux

At the January 2003 meeting, the By-Laws were amended to specify that election of Club officers for the coming year will be held in November of each year, rather than December. A quorum is required for this momentous event, so puhleeease attend this meeting.

For a program, Activities Chair and Penguin Connoisseur Mike, NW3V, may continue his Quixotic quest to install some version of Linux on the Compaq Presario Pentium donated by KO4ALA. (Actually, he conspires to kidnap said box after the October meeting, install Linux and ham radio and electronics applications at home, and show off the results at the November meeting.)

Chester G. Summitt, KB4UGF-SK

With great sadness we report that former AARC Member Chester G. Summitt, KB4UGF, has become a Silent Key, according to former AARC Member Joe Shepherd, KJ4S. Chester is survived by his wife, former AARC Member Marian K. Thompson, KC4ATV, among others.

Minutes of the September 16, 2003 Meeting of the Arlington Amateur Radio Club

President Jack WA4FXX called the meeting to order at 1933L at the Arlington Chapterhouse of the American Red Cross. Also attending were Alan KO4ALA, Jim, K9AUC, Slim KG4LOO, John WD4MIS, George KR4MU, Mike KA8OPJ, Mike KG4RKL, Dennis W4PWF Keith KG4UIR, Mike NW3V, Ian soon-to-be-licensed, and Colin from Red Cross.

The minutes of the August meeting, as published on the webpage and distributed by e-mail, were approved. The treasurer's report was read and accepted.

W4PWF had no report from FAR. ARRL is preparing comments on some NOIs. There are active discussions about the no-code activity in other countries and the potential effects on CW sub-bands. Dennis will be glad to represent comments from individuals; e-mail him at d.bodson@ieee.org

THE OCTOBER 21 MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE RED CROSS HEADQUARTERS IN DC, STARTING AT 6:30 OR SO. ASSEMBLE NO LATER THAN 6:10 P.M. AT THE ARLINGTON CHAPTER SO THAT WE CAN TRAVEL TOGETHER IN THE 13-PASSENGER VAN. THE FOURTEENTH PERSON GETS TO DRIVE SEPARATELY. Keith KG4UIR will discuss some of his new responsibilities at his day job.

Congratulations also to KG4UIR on his recent marriage. [We later met his beloved when she responded to the Isabel shelter. She's a keeper, Keith. Get her onto the ham licensing track so she only needs one cell phone!]

W4PWF has written up the changes to bylaws that we approved some time back. The change allows members to receive e-mail instead of paper, for a variety of club communications. WA4FXX and KA8OPJ will sign at the next opportunity.

In response to Red Cross' "Action Hero" fund-raiser, W4PWF moved, KG4UIR seconded, and attendees approved unanimously, that we would contribute $100 from our treasury. Following the example of WA4FXX, individual members made supplementary contributions.

KO4ALA will distribute further information on an ARES SET scheduled for 10/4/03. Part of the theme involves establishing communications with and among Red Cross units including the AARC.

WA4FXX announced that Lisa Thomas (Radio Goddess) will stretch about 20 ft of coax down from the ceiling at the Arlington ECC, in preparation for the visit of Hurricane Isabel. Colin announced that shelters may potentially be opened at W&L High and/or TJ Community Center. We plan to use 147.47/R, 146.58/S, and 145.13/R. Probably single operators on 12-hour shifts at ARC and each shelter, and maybe others for ARES mutual aid to other counties.

After adjourning at 8:38, NW3V demonstrated how LINUX can be run simply and without any problems at all, even on an obsolete non-standard Canadian-language COMPAQ computer. Eh?

Respectfully submitted,
Mike KA8OPJ, Secretary
