August 17 Meeting: Voice of Victory, Continued

At the August 17 meeting of the Arlington Amateur Radio Club, Program Chair Alan, KO4ALA, will screen the second part of Voice of Victory (a Jam Handy Production)--a video on militarization of Hallicrafters equipment to become the Army's SCC-299 (399?) during World War II. We saw the first part of this video--provided by Tom Azlin/N4ZPT--at the July 20 meeting.

Minutes of the July 20, 2004 Meeting of the Arlington Amateur Radio Club

The meeting was called to order by President Jack, WA4FXX, at 1932L. Also attending were Vice President Dennis, W4PWF, Secretary Mike, NW3V, Treasurer Mike, KG4RKL, Activities Chair Alan, KO4ALA, and Members Jas, KG4YIQ, Chuck, KI4DHW, Keith, KG4UIR, Ian, KI4DTP, Slim, KG4LOO, George, KR4MU, and Mike, KA8OPJ, and visitor Rich, KI4FWE.

It was moved, seconded, and passed that the Minutes of the May and June meetings posted on the web be approved.

Treasurer Mike, KG4RKL, presented the Treasurer's report on Club finances.

ARRL

ARRL Roanoke Division Director Dennis, W4PWF, said that ARRL Chief Operating Officer Mark Wilson, K1RO, will retire. There have been no League filings with the FCC and "nothing of Earth-shattering importance " since the last meeting to report. The real question is when will the FCC put out a response to the League's petition for restructuring [see ARLB018].

George, KR4MU, said that he was asked to be the National Traffic System Eastern Area Net Manager, and wanted to know whether he must be an ARRL Member to accept. Dennis replied that he did not.

FAR

FAR representative Alan, KO4ALA, noted that the Fall Auto-Call issue is out. Regarding F.A.R.Fest [9/11-12], Alan said that he tried to line up a VOA speaker for them.

EmComm

Jack, WA4FXX, read an email message dated July 20 from ACPD Captain Tom Panther regarding the experimental AM emergency broadcast station operating on 1700 kHz. Captain Panther said that the power cable was mowed, which fried the electronics. The vendor hopes to repair it next week. The station will then broadcast from 25th Street North and Old Dominion until August 10 and then from the Williamsburg Circle area until August 25. Please monitor the signals and mail in your reception reports.

Jack noted that volunteer operators are solicited for the Third Annual Arlington Police, Fire, and Sheriff 9-11 Memorial 5K race, which will be held on September 4 at 6 pm at the Crystal City Doubletree Hotel. For details, visit http://www.arlington911race.com/.

ARES Arlington County EC Alan, KO4ALA, solicited volunteer ops (or victims) for the drill at National Airport on September 25. Keith, KG4UIR, said that he heard that Fairfax ARES would be lead.

Ian, KI4DTP, said that CQ magazine published info on the [Dulles] Airport drill and a photo of the suction-cup antenna mount that he had mentioned before.

Alan said that the USMC Marathon would be on Halloween this year. N4ASX has askd some Members via email to volunteer.

Ian reminded us that the Presidential Inauguration would be January 20.

Old Business

Dennis reported that we scored 2100 points at Field Day. He read the email message with which he submitted the W4WVP logs, and noted that electronic submission earned us 50 points.

Jack read the after action report that he sent to the Arlington County Chapter regarding Field Day, noting, inter alia, that "our communications and demonstration exercise also met all its objectives."

Jack noted that action on the Membership application of Maria Worris was in order. It was moved, seconded, and passed unanimously that her application be accepted.

Alan, KO4ALA, said that he has started a list of those who want County IDs. Alan said that he will find out what other identifying information Lisa [Thompson] will want from applicants.

Jack reminded Members that AMSAT-North America will have its 2004 Space Symposium and Annual Meeting in Crystal City October 8-13. Jack proposed that the AARC might want to participate, for example, by talking-in out-of-towners arriving for the Symposium.

Regarding grants, Jack said that he didn't have the wish list that had been posted at Field Day, but "if there's anything else you think we need, email me."

Dennis, W4PWF, Trustee of Club Station W4WVP, said that he had renewed the W4WVP station license. Jack asked whether there was any other old business, and none was heard.

New Business

Jack, WA4FXX, reminded Members that the Arlington County Fair is coming up, and said he'd send another email [to gauge interest in AARC participation].

Jack asked Keith, KG4UIR, what was hapenning with the new Red Cross radios. He said we should get familiar with them. Keith said that they're being programmed in Montgomery County, and that we would get them "whenever."

Jack asked whether there was any other new business. Alan, KO4ALA, said that he had asked his brother, who works at Ferris, Baker, and Watts, about the investment banking view of BPL carriers, in view of Amateur and other protests.

Jack adjourned the business portion of the meeting at 2028L so that Members could watch the two MPEG videos brought by Activities Chair Alan, KO4ALA. The first was an ARRL video on interference to Amateur Radio caused by BPL signals. The second was Voice of Victory, a Jam Handy Production--a video on militarization of Hallicrafters equipment to become the Army's SCC-299 during World War II. This video on CD-R was provided by Tom Azlin/N4ZPT. It was very interesting, but, as it was getting late after the first part, we decided to watch the second part at a later meeting.

Respectfully submitted,
Michael Callaham, NW3V
Secretary, AARC

Reagan Airport Drill

[From The Volunteer Word, 2004-07-19] Volunteers from all Red Cross Chapters are invited to participate in the Reagan National Airport Drill on September 25. Opportunities exist to play victim roles (we're looking for 200 people) as well as leadership training, if you want more Mass Care experience. This is a Red Cross Washington Metro Area Consortium event hosted by the Arlington County Chapter. As we identify positions for the drill, Chapters can submit requests for volunteers to fill specific positions, enabling people who usually do not get a chance, to participate. There is a place for everyone to participate, including a table-top exercising decision-making as events unfold on the scene. The WMAC EOC will be at the Montgomery County Chapter. The on-scene Red Cross lead is Marci McCarthy. Travis Claggett and Keith Robertory are overseeing participation of Red Cross volunteers. Note: This is an excellent opportunity for people interested in Local Disaster Volunteer Management, to practice how to register a significant number of spontaneous volunteers. Victims do not need to be Red Cross volunteers but a Red Cross person needs to vouch for them, enabling us to invite friends, members of partner organizations, co-workers, etc. Youth are allowed, with the understanding of potential trauma from sights, sounds, smells, and other factors. To participate, RSVP to Keith at keith@robertory.com. Read More
