Events since the January Meeting

ARES nets: January was a banner month for the ARES net. The 01/24 net had a slightly above average nine checkins, 01/31 had a potential record of 15 checkins (as well as some more fun on simplex, details below), 02/07 had 10 checkins. The checkins list hasn't come out from the 02/14 net- but since the ARES net doesn't seem to be a popular activity for Valentine's Day I bet we were significantly lower...

UHF/VHF Simplex tests: After the 1/31 net nine stations moved to a 440MHz repeater (449.325- PL 151.4) to check if they had communications in general, then eight of those stations went to 440 simplex for a test. Most stations were able to hear most of the others, I suppose we should do a map/writeup sometime...

Notes from club members:

From James/KB1JMV:James asked the members mailing list about local stores for ham and electronics related stores- he summarized the results and his findings in an email to the list. Hopefully we can get this information on the wiki.

Alan/KO4ALA reports:Here's a tidbit Jim Hastings sent to me. Duracell -- among other battery companies -- has said it is no longer an advantage to store their cells in the refrigerator to prolong shelf-life. Their composition has been changed and cold storage doesn't help. So you can take all those AAs out of the fridge and use the space for beer cans....

Minutes of January 17, 2006 meeting

KR4MU moved to accept the minutes as published on the web. The motion was seconded and approved.

Treasurer's Report

KG4RKL gave report on finances, stated that there are 13 club patches left if anyone is interested. Also: club dues are due at this meeting.

ARRL Report

W4PWF- contested election for section incumbent Carl vs. Glen Sage. Visiting Hartford, CT tomorrow for ARRL BoD meeting. Pretty quiet- “no news is good news”. ARRL filed petition on regulation by bandwidth. ARRL membership dropped by 3k last year. Maybe thing about making membership independent of QST subscription for less

KO4ALA-Monitoring Times has online-only version that costs less

W4PWF- ARRL average age 55. Need to think about how to move forward.

WA4FXX-if anyone has ideas to help ARRL better serve members/ get more members, get ideas to W4PWF

Emergency Communications

KO4ALA- not a lot of emergency communications due to weather. 2 items of interest:

Alexandria Washington’s Bday parade 2/18- fun, easy to get to. Check NCAC website

NCAC training institute- 22 April- including winlink, nims. They’re trying to get short FEMA institutes ICS100/ICS700 (NIMS/NCS), probably at Vienna wireless winterfest. If you take online test, hang on to the form since that’s the certification you need for DHS.

KB3KKY- Told about another opportunity- DC National Marathon March 25, 7amKO4ALA- not a lot going on due to holidays.

Old Business

WA4FXX- Roy’s antenna- no news, Roy was out of town.

KA8OPJ- local 440 antenna installation some time soon, has 150’ LM400 cable

W4ART- NERA president. 8 full duplex rptrs in area. IRLP access. Eastern affiliate of cactus intertie system (100 sites). Membership required usually, except travelers and emergencies. Dues $35/year. Neradc.org / 147.27 Germantown rptr

WA4FXX- NERA, NVFMA good local groups that deserve our support

W4ART- lots of work to do, things to learn

WA4FXX- KA8OPJ- let people know when you want to schedule installation

KR4MU- plywood on tower needs painting

W4PWF- shows new club materials: now you’re talking & tech videos, emergency comms level 1, 2, 3 videos

WA4FXX- All of the above ready to sign out.

WA4FXX reported that venture crew 80 cancelled 4 session tech license course due to lack of interest, hopefully will be rescheduled. Send email if so.

New Business

WA4FXX- rtty round up- 3 ppl in – machine worked. 15,20 , 40m contacts- works well. Thnks & congrats to people who got things set up. Used VOX mode, would like to get PTT working.

KR4MU- Red Cross backup generator 5 years old, having trouble with battery, installed new one

WA4FXX- VAQP March 18^th - station open. Rtty contest 2/12, DX ARRL CW- 2/19. Next meeting 2/21. NAQSOP SSB pile up 1/21 (Saturday)

KG4VNC- looking for interest for portable club station to Shenandoah national park

KI4DTP- get lots of interest if you operate in public- take club brochures.

WA4FXX- any other contests people are interested in?

W4PWF- W4ART is applying for membership

WA4FXX- net managers/new ops for ARES net have been informal, need to formalize. Too many scripts floating around (Showed statistics for checkins for the past year.)

W4ART asked for information about net.

W4PWF talked about Tuesday night Club/ARES net

NW3V- net preamble included w/ constitution & by-laws. No formal net manager, no formal primary or backup NCS.

KO4ALA- might want to test simplex net sometimes

WA4FXX- Asked NW3V/KO4ALA to get together and come up with something to formalize this.

NW3V- if anyone wants to be NCS contact me

KG4VNC- any way to handle traffic on the net for practice?

KR4MU- not interfaced to regional nets so not easy to actually pass traffic.

NW3V- info about NTS available if people are interested

KR4MU- 147.300 WA4TSC repeater 7:30 every night

NW3V- no formal logging & reporting of net. Net not listed in ARRL net directory, is listed in VA section net directory.

KG4VNC- could we put together program on NTS

KB1JMV- would be interested

W4ART- should look into digital modes since they pass more traffic faster than voice. Maybe have winlink class?

WA4FXX- next month’s program- Arlington Department of Emergency Mgmt Directory will be here in February if there are no emergencies. (Showed invitation letter sent to Directory of Emergency Management)

KR4MU- NTS info is in club’s level one Net operating guide

KO4ALA- Trying to get Dan Kitelin (?)- author “contesting for Modest Stations”- for March program/ Winlink. Trying to get Charlie Kriser(?) for April program. Could do program on traffic handling or more than emcomm.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 2052L.

Respectfully submitted,
--Adam, KG4VNC
AARC Secretary
