The July 18 meeting of the Arlington Amateur Radio Club will be held at the usual time (1930L) and place (4333 Arlington Blvd).
We will conduct an after-action analysis of the W4WVP participation in Field Day 2006.
Yours truly will be absent for the third month running. Another last minute business trip. Great thanks to Secretary Emeritus Mike/NW3V for taking the minutes in my absence.
I will be sending a packet of QSL cards to the outgoing bureau at ARRL shortly after the July meeting- if you have cards you want to send out please bring them to the meeting. Dan/N8YSZ has agreed to collect them, I will pick them up from him when I get back into town, then send them to the bureau. Please remember that we must provide proof of ARRL membership for everyone using a club packet like this, so please bring a copy of your ARRL membership card or QST mailing label. I'll keep these on file once I get them so this should be a one-time thing.
Hope to see everyone on the air!
73,
--Adam, AI4QB, AARC Secretary
Thanks to Mike/NW3V for taking the minutes of the June meeting!
President Jack/WA4FXX called the meeting to order at 1933L. Attending, besides FXX, were Members Dennis/W4PWF, James/KB1JMV, Mike/KA8OPJ, Bob/WB4KLJ, Mike/KG4RKL, Chuck/KI4DHW, Mike/NW3V, Ian/KI4DTP, Alan/KO4ALA, George/KR4MU, Paul/WG4M, visitor Jim/KG6EFT, and visitors (later, Members) Ken/WB4AKK, Jack/K5OTZ, and Chris/KF6NFW. Roy/AI4GO, checked in by radio.
It was moved, seconded, and passed to approve the Minutes of the May meeting as published on w4wvp.org. Treasurer Mike/KG4RKL, reported on the Club's finances. It was moved, seconded, and passed to authorize reimbursement of Field Day food purchases, not to exceed seventy-five dollars. Mike noted he would follow up on reminding delinquent Members to pay their dues for 2006.
Alan/KO4ALA noted that the Arlington County Chapter chain of command for Disaster Reponse is: CEO (Lynn Kocik Keefe, x730), Chief Preparedness & Response Officer (Rochelle Brown, x747), and Preparedness & Response Coordinator (Sohrab Rezvan, x733).
Dennis/W4PWF discussed ARRL matters, especially new DXCC rules and Swain Island.
Jack asked how many applications for membership were pending. It was moved, seconded, and passed unanimously to accept the membership applications of Ken/WB4AKK, Jack/K5OTZ, and Chris/KF6NFW.
Jack then asked Members and visitors to introduce themselves.
Jack asked Mike/KA8OPJ about plans to install the 440 MHz antenna and transmission line he had purchased for W4WVP. After brief discussion, it was decided that antenna installation would commence at 0930L on June 24, the first day of Field Day. George/KR4MU said he would get the long ladder from the shed. Mike/NW3V relayed the offer of Dan/N8YSZ to do the climbing, but asked who would provide the safety belt and climbing gear, which he doesn't have. Bob/WB4KLJ said that Lew Doss (WB6YGX) had one.
Jack asked about the club's Rigblaster Nomic interface. Dennis/W4WVP said it still works only on VOX, not on PTT.
There was discussion of the drafting of an application for an Arlington Community Foundation 2006 Community Enhancement Grant, and application for 501(c)(3) status. Jack asked about the costs and benefits of applying for 501(c)(3) status. Alan/KO4ALA said there is a one-time charge, currently $150, to apply for 501(c)(3) status, but the charge will soon increase. Ian/KI4DTP said 501(c)(3) status is required to be eligible to apply for an Arlington Community Foundation Community Enhancement Grant. Incorporation is not required. The club has an IRS Employer Identification Number (EIN), said Treasurer Mike/KG4RKL. Chris/KF6NFW, volunteered to help.
Dennis/W4PWF asked Alan/KO4ALA, if he could provide Vienna Wireless Society, Inc. incorporation documents as examples, and he said he would.
At this time Roy/AI4GO checked in by radio.
Jack said Field Day planning would be deferred until after the program on Winlink. He asked whether there was any other old business, and there was none.
Activities Chair Alan/KO4ALA introduced Jim Scott/KG6EFT, who presented a presentation named Winlink 2000 and Medical Missions to Honduras.
Jim narrated a fascinating and inspiring slide show regarding the use of Winlink 2000 by International Health Service (IHS) of Minnesota, an organization to whom Jim had devoted much preparation stateside and service in Honduras. Jim said adoption of WinLink 2000 for message passing reduced five hours of voice net operation to 10 minutes of Winlink operation, and that was automated, which was a great benefit to Jim, who, like other IHS volunteers, liked to make themselves useful for activities dictated by circumstance.
Jim's narrative was similar to his presentation to the local chapter of the Quarter Century Wireless Association in May, which is a must read for those who missed this presentation.
After the Winlink presentation, Mike/NW3V tried to demonstrate the WB6ZQZ FDLOG software to be used at W4WVP for FD2006. The first attempt, on a Linux laptop, bombed--the software exited when it detected no local area network. (Mike had not provided a LAN for the meeting; he and Dan/N8YSZ had LANs available when testing the software at home.) Mike then demonstrated the software on the W4WVP Windows PC, which worked fine in stand-alone mode, but by that time most attendees were taking their leave.
After the Field Day planning and logging software demo, the meeting was adjourned, at an unrecorded time.
Respectfully submitted,
--Mike, NW3V
