September 15 Meeting: NERA repeater system

The September 19 meeting of the Arlington Amateur Radio Club will be held at the usual time (1930L) and place (4333 Arlington Blvd).

W4WVP member Art/W4ART will be giving a presentation on the NERA repeater system. Go Art!

Secretary AI4QB will continue in his tradition of missing meetings for business travel. Many thanks to Secretary Emeritus Mike/NW3V for agreeing to take the minutes in my absence.

Same as last month: I will be sending a packet of QSL cards to the outgoing bureau at ARRL shortly after the meeting- if you have cards you want to send out please bring them to the meeting and give them to the acting Secretary. Please remember that we must provide proof of ARRL membership for everyone using a club packet like this, so please bring a copy of your ARRL membership card or QST mailing label. I'll keep these on file once I get them so this should be a one-time thing.

Hope everyone else can make it to the meeting!

73,
--Adam, AI4QB, AARC Secretary

Special Presentation

Visitor Rochelle Brown, Director of Emergency Response for the Arlington Red Cross, spoke about changes in the Red Cross volunteer organization. The Red Cross national HQ decided that all volunteers and staff need to pass a criminal background check. This is being done on-line in conjunction with mybackgroundcheck.com. All volunteers who have not had a recent background check for Red Cross purposes should go to this site and have the background check done. There is no cost to the volunteers to get this done. There is a line in the agreement that says that you agree to allow a credit check to be carried out, this is not being done for Red Cross volunteers. The check is done entirely by mybackgroundcheck.com, they only tell the Red Cross if you pass or if you were flagged for some reason so the Red Cross doesn't get any personal information about people who have the checks done.

Ms. Brown encouraged people to get this done quickly- the goal is to have all the checks completed by October 31st for budgetary reasons.

KF6NFW noted that the site was only available for Internet Explorer users.

Ms. Brown passed out information sheets about the background checks. If you need a form or have other questions or concerns please contact Heather Pritchett, Volunteer Coordinator, at hpritchett@arlingtonredcross.org or 703-527-3010 x 735.

WA4FXX and many others thanked Ms. Brown for her time and effort in bringing the club up to speed on these changes.

EmComm

WA4FXX: taking CERT course, well worth it. This is a citizen's organization, there are no county records unless you choose to register with the county. Remember that IS-100 and IS-700 are required for CERT deployable registrants as well as several other volunteer roles.

KI4DHW: new Arlington County Emergency Plan has been released. The old red cover version has been replaced with a new blue cover version.

KO4ALA: Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has charged MARS with providing communications support for airport security.

KO4ALA: on the board at NVFMA, check out the repeaters that they coordinate: 146.79, 146.91, 447.025.

K5OTZ noted that he was part of a group testing the 2m repeaters from National and Dulles airports, they both could be heard in both locations.

Old Business

WA4FXX noted that he had made 200 copies of the Morse code and updated handouts.

AI4QB: brought CPO and keys from N8YSZ

WA4FXX reminded KO4ALA to take the table-toppers as well, and stated that he would come by but not be able to work the table.

W4ART said that he could bring a 2m mobile rig

New Business

WA4FXX and discussion noted that Bob/WB4KLJ checked out the IC-761 and the problem is not in the power supply. The rig is exhibiting garbled voice on 40m SSB, still readable but not good. Looking for trustworthy shop to do the repairs.

KR4MU noted that when WB4KLJ was looking at the 761 he also checked out the other radios and found that the 221 was off-frequency by 200hz, he tuned them up. W4PWF volunteered to find a repairman, ship the radio, and get it fixed.

WA4FXX said that Goddard ARC/WA3NAN is looking for operators for shuttle retransmissions, which they've been doing for 25 years.

WA4FXX reminded everyone that JOTA is coming up, as well as the CQ WW RTTY 'test 23-24 September.

W4ART talked about changed in the NERA system. The Gaithersburg machine was taken down and moved to Frederick MD to be a new remote site there. They completely replaced the Cacapon Mountain system as well.

K5OTZ noted that there is a 6meter FM net/KO1D at 52.51Mhz 1900L Wednesday nights.

KO4ALA noted that there is a repeater in Alexandria on 53.13 -1, 107.2 tone. This repeater is also linked to 220.

WA4FXX presented AI4QB with a record of net checkins for the year.

KB1JMV noted that he received his power supply back from repair, he found a good repairman in CA with reasonable rates.

Program: Phil Wherry/AI4JF presented a talk on cellular telephone infrastructure that was very interesting and informative.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 2115.

Secretary
