Minutes and Finances

Minutes- Move to accept as posted- seconded/passed.

Treasurer's report- Mike/KG4RKL gave the treasurer's report.

ARRL Report

Dennis/W4PWF- First, thanks to everyone who came to Alan’s award ceremony.

Have withdrawn regulation by bandwidth petition. Official unofficial reason is that ARRL didn’t sell it well enough to members. What was the problem that we were trying to solve- pactor 3 in digital bandwidth space, but it’s wideband signal. Probably will ask FCC to allow wideband digital signals in voice bands. Other than that things are quiet.

WA4FXX- again thanks to people coming out for Alan’s award

NW3V- good presentation there as well- by W3ZZ

EmComm

wa4fxx: some people working dulles drill, not sure about river run or hurricane exercise

Neighborhood day serviced by RACES.

Dulles Drill- three worked it, Aric/KI4THM, Chuck/KI4DHW & Mike/NW3V

NW3V gave report: Helped with Red Cross family table. Was interesting, didn’t have a lot of radio traffic. As soon as got in parking lot tried to tune in frequencies- no nets up yet. Portable rptr not up yet. Started shadowing Family Assistance Team head, including three airlines including ticket counters. Later the Red Cross Family Assistance team showed up and shadowed them. Got behind the counters at a few airlines- Lufthansa, JetBlue, ANA. As the drill unfolded traffic picked up. Eventually had to go through security and to the in-transit lounge. Could get a few signals near windows. At the end of the day, this part of it worked well. The hams there didn’t do much traffic, mostly just acting as radio interface for their shadows.

KI4DHW- very well run exercise. Gave a chance to stay with first responders, his shadow was right in the middle of things. Changed all the frequencies the day before. First responders are really interesting to watch in that environment. Doing a good job. If you have the time you should get involved in one of these drills to see how it works. Some people did pass a lot of traffic. Watching how professional the first responders were was interesting.

KI4THM- stationed at Reston ECC with some old-time hams who really knew their stuff. Had their batteries and mobile rigs/antennas up in no time. Crucial aspect of whole exercise- seeing how fast they could respond. Gave KI4THM the opportunity to handle traffic. Also impressed with how well the hospital was prepared. Also something called medical net where they coordinated how many people were coming/what types of injuries/etc. In a real emergency the usual net may not be up, so they might be passing new traffic.

WA4FXX- one of the objectives for field day is to practice setting up and tearing down portable stations, so that everyone has that experience. Typically we only set up in one of the Red Cross shelters, but we may need to do that someday.

NW3V- be good for a reporter as well.

WA4FXX- any questions about Dulles? Thanks for going out and representing us.

KI4DHW- about sixty hams.

WA4FXX- river run- anyone participate?

Andy/KI4THF- set up about a mile from net control. At one time had to go looking for a down runner, had to walk between to checkpoints to try to find them.

KI4DHW- had a bicycle down. N4ASX was down where it happened. Had a pretty good operation (Fairfax ARES). First year put net control on VA side of river, next year they wanted to try something different. Second year didn’t work so well. This year it worked ok. Had to work simplex from parts of the course. Palisades at Fort Hunt was hard to get out of. Dulles had the ECRV with telescoping antenna.

Old Business

WA4FXX- applications pending- Prentiss/MSP to accept his application.

Liz/KI4THL- active at the red cross- will be coordinator of emergency volunteers. Want to do a shelter drill. Took ham class with Aric and Andy.

KI4DTP- anyone interested in getting a table?

WA4FXX- roster for internal use, please correct any errors.

KI4DTP- did we ever come up with something to do for 400th anniversary special event station?

WA4FXX- still pretty much open, no other work has gone into it. July/August/September? Good times to do Jamestown.

WA4FXX: Manassas hamfest coming up- first Sunday in June (June 3). Berryville first Sunday in August.

New Business

WA4FXX- any new business? Other contests/activities coming up?

Field day: WA4FXX: what thoughts/ideas do we have on field day? Dan/N8YSZ put in a lot of work getting a plan together based on NW3V’s old work.

NW3V- N8YSZ put together the station layouts that we’re going to put together. (wrote up plan from memory of N8YSZ’s plans)

KR4MU volunteers to cook for field day.

W4PWF- move to approve up to $75 for food, MSP

WA4FXX- any additional comments?

KG4RKL- looking at roster, there are still 5 SWLs so we should invite them to Field Day. Also, is anybody interested in ordering field day merchandise?

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 2045L

Respectfully submitted,
--Adam, AI4QB
AARC Secretary
