January Meeting

The January meeting of the Arlington Amateur Radio Club will be held at the usual time (1930L) and place (4333 Arlington Blvd), but on an unusual date (Wednesday, January 21), because of the Presidential Inauguration on January 20. The Arlington County Net will convene on 145.47(-) MHz for an unusual third-Tuesday session on January 20 at 1930L.

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Arlington Amateur Radio Club 2008-12-16

President Reed called the meeting to order and a sign-in sheet was circulated.

Minutes from the November 2008 meeting were posted on the web. They were accepted as published. The Treasurer made his report and encouraged members to pay their dues for 2009.

ARRL

Dennis attended the ARRL Administration and Finance Committee meeting. The ARRL is financially healthy. The ARRL thought the Congressional report on the FCC was very correct in finding the FCC was not very effective. Part of this problem was the influence of Chairman Martin, who will soon be leaving. There was nothing new on BPL. The FCC has not acted following the court orders on this subject. Dennis also mentioned there were seven nominees for the Vic Clark service award.

Emergency Communications

Gary mentioned that the VA Section will mail its state level ARES listing to the local (county) organizations for reconciliation with the local data bases. For January 20th, the Federal agencies will activate their communications capabilities and local ARES organizations in the surrounding area may also be activated. More information was to follow on this subject. Gary also noted the FCC had asked the amateur community to help the general population by sending out information on the conversion from analog to digital TV.

Jim noted the large orange binder in the radio club operation room with all the information on the club equipment and the emergency liaisons. He also pass around the club rolladexs for updating. These are also maintained in the club room for use in emergencies.

Repeater

Craig reported to the club that the various transmitters for the repeater had been upgraded over a period of several months. The current transmitter was a Motorola Micor unit rated at 100 watts output continuous duty. The radio transmits a PL tone of 107.2 Hz. If you want to receive only the repeater on your monitoring receiver, put this tone into your squelch tone encoder for receive. Tests will be made with items such as ARRL broadcasts to see if the repeater can provide "continuous duty" as rated.

New Members

New members include Rene, KJ4HXR, Thom, KJ4IKJ, and Judah, KB3NCW. They were duly elected as club members.

Old Business

The club's room requests for 2009 for meetings and the usual contest activities have been approved. See the attached listing on the following pages. And additional request will be made for drop-in time on the fourth Saturday or Sunday of each month. The January 20th meeting will be moved to January 21st to avoid the problems of that day. The club will have its on the air meeting on January 20th on the club repeater at 7:30 PM.

Operating Events

The next operating event is the ARRL RTTY Roundup on January 4, 2009. Interested parties should contact President Reed about their interest by e-mail. Jack noted this a good opportunity to learn about RTTY operations.

Other Items

Randy noted the club had started in 1974. It was good to have new members to take on responsibilities associated with the club. The idea of a club outreach strategy to new amateurs in the area was noted. Dennis might be able to get listings from the ARRL to help in this area. Arthur also noted he was beginning to work with McLean High School on starting a club there based on interest from the students and the Physics Department.

The meeting was adjourned. A gift exchange was held and food was consumed after the meeting.
